What I want in a GOOGLE MACHINE

Google Machine

If Google has to design an OS, what I would be interseted in. I will call it as Google Machine.
1. No need to write new kernel, file system and all that.
2. Use Linux and build the operating platform
3. To become fully competitive with Apple, MS and Linux, Google has to be strong in applications.

  • Office Suit
    • Word Processing – Google Docs (Writely)
    • Spreadsheet – Google Spreadsheets.
    • Power Point application – coming soon, may be.

Well I would suggest, Google acquires Zoho (or anybody suitable) to develop future Google productivity applications and also support them.

4. Use Mozilla Firefox as the browser (revamped with all the Google extensions built in) plus Mail and IM client.

  • Key features of the new browser
    • Browser can be invoked from any application (to be able to read all formats) and should be able to upload HTML files somewhere (Google page creator??). This can be used to create custom books (personal or shared). Sorry this is not blog.
    • Split browser window. Yes I need to read or compare two stories at the same time.
    • Interface should be Apple aqua type. No buttons visible until you point the mouse to a particular corner.
    • Integrated Google Reader, Google notebook.
    • Direct upload to picasa web-album; built-in.
    • Social Bookmarking and online Bookmarking should be built in with tools (like highlighting or stickies) for analysis.
    • Built in support for blogging (like taking clips from websites, edit/add your own content, save them as drafts and load them as one click to any(popular) blogging site.
    • Email client built in. No more multiple windows. Although this is highly recommended but can be ignored. I have a better option for this later.
    • Integrated Calendar. Allow changes from anywhere while browsing. Better support for reminders. e.g. When you have a reminder, browser should take you to the website.
  • Mail same as Google mail.
    • Can you give us desktop version? Ok give us drag and drop too.
    • Integrate Google Reader.
    • Keyword shortcuts.
    • Fully integrated Google reader
    • No support of any other e-mail. Sorry no to exchange and Apple Mail.
  • IM as Google talk
    • Fully integrated Audio and Video support
    • Support for e-mails with audio clips.
    • Cross platform support like yahoo and msn (although not necessary).
    • Support of sharing Google and Youtube videos, right from the IM session.

5. Media Applications.

  • Picasa as the photo organizer (it is really good).
  • Online video editor for all types of formats. I want to down load videos from different resources like my phone, digi cam, handycam. Toss them in one single video format. I want to store them online so that they can be shared in touch of “share” button.
  • Can be a desktop version too.
  • Support for sideshows and sharing.
  • Create DVD’s from every type of video or slideshows and able to mix it with music.
  • Application to create podcasts.
  • Something GoogleBand will be cute to play day to day mp3, wma etc etc with mpeg(x) formats. Also Radio support.

6. Now the Desktop environment.

  • No icons on the screen please. Everything is a gadget/widget. Just like Apple dashboard
  • Just press keyboard combination and you will be presented with application like same old windows + E = explorer. But instead of that ugly window, google will present semi transparent window with all kinds of icons. I have not thought about those details.
  • There will be an integrated virtual drive (online folders that are important to you). These folders are automatically synced as soon as you drag and drop files there.
  • You can access them from anywhere.
  • No start button please. Everything is on the dashboard but hidden. No clutter. Yes you have a learning curve.

7. Developer Center – Optional Pack

  • Well, who has the time to write software.
  • But all this Google API hype should come to terms. Give us a platform to use the API’s.
  • I want to create a widget or a plugin to MY copy of OS. Let me do it and give me documentation.
  • No need of other scripting tool or anything. Give us an interface to code linux(shell) scripts and a debugging tool :)

This is not the end. A lot of things to be thought of. I am thinking….You guys can add.
